Design Build Custom Bathroom Renovation in New Jersey
This is the most extensive type of bathroom renovation Service in New Jersey possible in your home. Whether it is to create a new bathroom where one doesn’t exist or knock down walls and capture adjacent spaces. This is where 30 years of experience will help deliver the dream bathroom you’ve always wanted. This type of bathroom project is the most invasive and longest to accomplish. The need for insight, planning, and experience should not be underrated. Permits, Drawings, and Inspections are required to take on such an endeavor, but not to worry The Powder Room Guys have you covered!
Your journey will begin with an in home consultation with our owner and this initial appointment can last up to 2 hours.
It begins with a question-and-answer session. You will discuss the goals and needs for the renovation, and an overview of your needs or wants.
During the visit we will create a “Before” 2D Floor Plan based on the existing conditions, while also creating floor plans of adjacent spaces that will be impacted during the build. These plans will also indicate the structural, mechanical and fixture locations. This will be the foundation from which your new design will be crafted and we will need the before plan set as part of the permitting process.
After your site visit you should expect to see your first concept plan version in your email within 48hrs! This plan set will project build notes with images, an “After” 2D Floor Plan with 3D Image Renderings, so you can see how the new space will look! But we don’t stop there, we will also provide you the opportunity to do 2 more revisions, for a total of three concepts to choose from.
Once the build plans have been finalized we will provide you the “After” 2D Floor plan also needed for your permit package. You will also receive a comprehensive finish material checklist with the quantities and dimensions identified so you can complete your planning, budgeting, and shopping process.
Lastly, we will provide a fully detailed proposal to complete your new Bathroom Renovation in New Jersey. This is a paid service consultation, valued at over $1500.00 or even more. Our fee of only $500.00, will get you 30 years of experience, knowledge, and advice, as well as all these documents and drawings to keep!
We also offer professional designer services in New Jersey, for a separate fee, if you need a little more creative insight and direction. Moving forward with us, your design-build fee will be applied against your project deposit.
Schedule your Design-Build Consultation today and let’s get started on your dream bathroom!
What is Design Build Custom Bathroom Renovation?
Design build is a project delivery method where one company handles both design and construction. Instead of the traditional approach (hire architect/designer → get plans → find contractor → hope they match), design build integrates everything under one roof.
How Traditional Bathroom Renovation Works:
Step 1: Hire a bathroom designer or architect
Step 2: Designer creates plans (may not understand construction realities)
Step 3: Get bids from multiple contractors
Step 4: Contractors say “this won’t work” or “this will cost way more”
Step 5: Go back to designer for changes
Step 6: Get new bids
Step 7: Finally start construction (months later)
Problems: Finger-pointing between designer and contractor, unexpected costs, timeline delays, compromised vision
How Design Build Bathroom Renovation Works:
Step 1: Meet with our design build team
Step 2: We design based on your vision AND construction realities
Step 3: You see accurate pricing immediately
Step 4: Approve design and budget
Step 5: We start construction (no delay)
Benefits: Single point of contact, accurate budgets from start, faster timeline, no finger-pointing, seamless execution
What Makes It “Custom”?
Custom means the bathroom is designed specifically for YOU:
- Unique layouts that maximize your specific space
- Personal style reflected in every detail
- Custom features you won’t find in standard bathrooms
- Tailored solutions for your specific needs
- One-of-a-kind design not replicated anywhere else
Unlike choosing from pre-designed packages, custom design build creates something completely unique to your home, lifestyle, and preferences.
Investment Range: $16,000 – $40,000+
Design build custom bathroom renovations cover all spectrums:
- $16,000-$25,000: Complete custom design for standard-sized bathrooms with quality materials
- $25,000-$35,000: Larger bathrooms with premium finishes and special features
- $35,000-$40,000+: Luxury master bathrooms with high-end materials, custom cabinetry, and unique elements
The investment reflects the comprehensive nature of the service—you’re getting professional design expertise combined with expert construction, all managed seamlessly.
Who Needs Design Build Custom Bathroom Renovation in New Jersey?
Homeowners with Unique Visions
Do you have a clear picture in your mind of exactly what you want your bathroom to look like? Maybe you’ve been collecting inspiration photos on Pinterest or Houzz. Perhaps you’ve sketched ideas on paper. You know the feeling you want—spa-like relaxation, modern elegance, vintage charm, or something completely unique.
Design build is perfect when you:
- Have specific style preferences that standard options don’t match
- Want every detail customized to your taste
- Need professional help translating your vision into reality
- Want confidence that what’s designed will actually get built
- Desire a bathroom that reflects your personality
Properties with Challenging Spaces
Not all bathrooms are simple rectangles with standard dimensions. New Jersey homes, especially older properties in Bergen, Morris, and Essex Counties, often have:
- Unusual layouts (angled walls, sloped ceilings, odd dimensions)
- Small footprints requiring creative space planning
- Awkward doorways or window placements
- Structural challenges (support beams, plumbing stacks in inconvenient locations)
- Multiple issues needing coordinated solutions
Design build excels at solving these challenges because designers and builders work together from day one, creating solutions that are both beautiful and buildable.
Homeowners Wanting Premium Results
If you’re investing significantly in your bathroom renovation, you want everything perfect. Design build ensures:
- Professional design quality equal to high-end homes
- Custom cabinetry built to exact specifications
- Unique tile patterns and layouts
- Special features like heated floors, steam showers, towel warmers
- Perfect finishes with attention to every detail
- Coordinated selections (all materials complement each other)
You’re not limited to what’s available in showroom catalogs—we can source specialty materials, create custom pieces, and incorporate unique elements.
Busy Professionals Needing Full-Service
Managing a bathroom renovation while working full-time and handling family responsibilities is overwhelming. Design build simplifies everything:
- Single point of contact (one team, one number, one app)
- Fewer decisions to make (we guide you through options systematically)
- No coordination headaches (we manage all vendors and subcontractors)
- Clear timeline (we handle scheduling)
- Transparent process (you know what’s happening when)
Instead of managing designers, contractors, plumbers, electricians, and tile setters separately, you communicate with one team that handles everything.
Homeowners Creating Master Bathroom Retreats
Your master bathroom should be a personal sanctuary—a place to relax, refresh, and escape daily stress. Design build creates:
- Spa-like atmospheres with soaking tubs and rain showers
- Custom storage solutions for all your personal items
- Perfect lighting for grooming and ambiance
- Luxurious materials (natural stone, premium tile, quality fixtures)
- Smart layouts separating toilet areas for privacy
- Personal touches that make the space uniquely yours
We take time to understand how you’ll actually use your bathroom and design accordingly.
Families Adding New Bathrooms
Adding a bathroom to your New Jersey home requires careful planning:
- Location determination (where to place it)
- Plumbing routing (most efficient paths)
- Electrical planning (adequate power and lighting)
- Ventilation design (proper exhaust)
- Space optimization (making the most of available area)
- Permit coordination (municipal approvals)
Design build streamlines this process because we’re planning construction realities from the first conversation.

Design Build vs Traditional Bathroom Renovation
Why Design Build is Better
Aspect | Design Build | Traditional Approach |
Team | One team (designer + builder together) | Separate designer and contractor |
Communication | Single point of contact | Coordinate between multiple parties |
Timeline | Faster (parallel processes) | Slower (sequential processes) |
Budget Accuracy | Accurate from start | Often changes during construction |
Accountability | One team responsible | Finger-pointing between parties |
Design Feasibility | Designed with construction in mind | May not be buildable as drawn |
Changes | Easy to adjust | Requires designer and contractor coordination |
Cost | Often less (streamlined process) | Often more (inefficiencies) |
Stress Level | Lower (one team manages all) | Higher (you coordinate everything) |
Common Problems with Traditional Approach:
“The contractor says your design won’t work”
- Designer creates beautiful plans
- Contractor says they’re not buildable
- Back to drawing board
- Delays and frustration
Design Build Solution: We design only what we can actually build. No surprises.
“This will cost way more than expected”
- Designer creates plans without knowing costs
- Contractor bids much higher than budget
- Must redesign or compromise vision
Design Build Solution: We know costs as we design. Stay within budget from start.
“The designer and contractor are blaming each other”
- Something doesn’t match plans
- Designer says contractor didn’t follow drawings
- Contractor says drawings were wrong
- You’re stuck in the middle
Design Build Solution: One team, one responsibility. No finger-pointing.
“We’re waiting for the designer to respond”
- Construction question arises
- Contractor needs designer clarification
- Designer is slow to respond
- Work stops, timeline extends
Design Build Solution: Designer and builder are the same team. Instant answers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the design build process take from start to finish?
The complete design build custom bathroom renovation typically takes 8-12 weeks total. This includes 2-3 weeks for design development and material selection, 1-2 weeks for permits and material ordering, and 4-6 weeks for construction. More complex projects with extensive custom elements may take longer. Simple projects may complete faster. We provide specific timelines based on your project scope during the initial consultation.
What's the difference between design build and hiring a designer separately?
With design build, one team handles design and construction together. This means faster timelines (no waiting between design and construction phases), accurate budgets from the start (designers understand construction costs), no finger-pointing if issues arise (one team is responsible), easier communication (single point of contact), and designs that are actually buildable (designers know construction realities). Hiring separately often leads to delays, budget surprises, and coordination headaches.
Can I still make my own material choices in design build?
Absolutely! Design build doesn’t mean we make all decisions. We guide you through selections, present options based on your style and budget, provide professional recommendations, coordinate all materials to work together beautifully, and source whatever you want. You make final decisions on every tile, fixture, color, and finish. We just make the process easier by presenting curated options and ensuring everything works together.
How much design control do I have in the design build process?
You have complete control. This is YOUR bathroom. We never push you toward choices you don’t want. Our role is to: understand your vision thoroughly, present options that match your style, explain pros and cons of different approaches, recommend solutions based on experience, and execute exactly what you approve. The design is collaborative—we bring expertise, you bring vision. Together we create something perfect.
What if I don't know what style I want?
That’s completely normal and we’re experts at helping you discover your style. During design consultation, we: show you style examples (modern, traditional, transitional, farmhouse, spa, etc.), ask what you’re drawn to and what you dislike, present material samples to see what resonates, discuss your home’s existing style for coordination, and develop mood boards showing how elements work together. Most clients start unsure and end with clear direction through our guided process.
Do you create 3D renderings of the design?
Yes, for most design build projects we can create 3D renderings showing exactly what your finished bathroom will look like. This is especially helpful for complex designs, unique layouts, or when you want to visualize before construction begins. Renderings show tile layouts, fixture placements, lighting, colors, and overall appearance. They help you make confident decisions and ensure we’re all envisioning the same result.
Can design build work within a strict budget?
Yes! Actually, design build is BETTER for strict budgets because we design knowing costs from the start. We discuss your budget in the initial consultation, design within that range from day one, present material options at different price points, show you where money is best spent for maximum impact, and identify areas where you can save without sacrificing quality. There are no budget surprises because we’re designing and pricing simultaneously.
What happens if we discover problems during construction?
Sometimes demolition reveals unexpected issues: water damage, mold, outdated wiring, or structural concerns. When this happens, we: photograph the issue immediately, notify you through our app, explain the problem clearly, provide solution options with costs, get your approval before proceeding, and adjust timeline if necessary. Because we’re design build, we can often solve problems quickly without waiting for separate designer input. Our 3-year warranty covers our workmanship on all repairs.

My family and I are SO happy with our bathroom. From the very beginning of the process, Paul and his team were detailed, thorough, and professional. I'm not kidding when I say detailed and thorough lol. Our renovation plan was pages long and any question we had, Paul was happy to answer but the answer was usually already in our plan lol. I should add that my husband and I were away on vacation while the entire renovation took place and it went without a hitch. We received daily updates and we could reach out to any of the vendors or contractors at anytime. I could go on and on, but needless to say they get 5 stars from us!Posted on Mystral BruntonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We just completed a major overhaul of our second floor main bathroom and couldn't be happier with the outcome. Our experience working with Paul was excellent from the start and continued through construction until all the finishing touches were done. He has put together a great team of craftsmen and we always felt like they took great care with our home. Renovations should always be this smooth and easy! Thanks again!Posted on Tricia CoreyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The Powder Room Guys did my bathroom last summer and it was the best experience anyone could ask for. So organized, so responsive, and end result was amazing. If you want the most stress-free bathroom renovation, this is the company for you. The price was also comparable to other estimates I received. Consider yourself lucky if they service your area!Posted on Renee and JoostTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had our dated and non-functional attic bathroom renovated and it turned out great. The guys were helpful and professional. Communication with them and sub-contractors was very effective, also after the job was done. During such a renovation there is still a lot that you have to do yourself (pick out vanity, tiles, glass etc) but I think the Powder Room Guys guided us well in the process and were clear when materials needed to be there.Posted on Yvonne LTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a great experience with our bathroom remodel! Paul's team was very professional, responsive, and quick to address any questions or concerns we had throughout the process. Their pricing was fair, and we really appreciated the flexibility to choose our own finishing materials and styles. The final result exceeded our expectations, and we’re thrilled with our new bathroom. Highly recommend!Posted on R STrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It was a very good experience working with Paul and his team. This renovation was leagues above our previous renovation experience. We appreciated his timeliness, organization, and overall transparency from start to finish. We especially appreciated the team's use of a HEPA air purifier during demolition, it was key in keeping most of the dust contained. The app utilized by Paul made for seamless communication and really aided in a smooth execution of the renovation. We love our new bathroom!Posted on Tiffany LinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am so happy we reached out to the Powder Room Guys to gut renovate our bathroom, after receiving an offensively high quote from another contractor. From the first phone call to the final checklist review, Paul communicated clearly and was completely transparent about every step of the process. His workers notified us when they would arrive each morning and posted pictures of their progress at the end of the day. Tiling and carpentry were top notch. They even painted an exterior wall on the outside of the bathroom free of charge. Paul and his team truly went above and beyond to transform our sad little bathroom into a gorgeous space straight out of a magazine. Paul is a gem and a professional who cares deeply about the quality of his work and addresses any issues immediately. He told me he never wants to hear his clients say, “Eh…I can live with that” and he means it - he wants satisfied customers! His prices were very fair with no hidden surprises, and he backs up his work with a 3 year warranty. I can’t wait to work with Paul again for our next project. Highly recommend!!Posted on Samira NejadTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Paul & his team executed a perfect renovation of our guest bathroom and I could not recommend him enough. We are in the process of a phased remodel of our 120-year-old home - so I have worked with many contractors and subcontractors over the past few years. None come close to The Powder Room Guys experience - and most quoted me far more for my project. Paul is a diamond in the rough - thoughtful, consultative, fair & regimented. Working with him & his team is seamless and painless with beautiful results. THANK YOU PAUL!
