Partial Demolition Bathroom Makeover in New Jersey
Maybe you have a newer home, or the bathroom was remodeled in the last 15-20 years, but its time for a style a change? Then a bathroom make-over may just what’s needed! This our least invasive type of renovation. When your walls, electrical and plumbing are already up to code and you are really looking for a style change, this partially invasive process could be the answer. This type of renovation requires only removing the elements that you no longer want to see. It is an affordable and cost effective way to bring your bathroom up to current styles. We will begin with a partial demolition of the space. We will replace like for like, meaning there are no plumbing or electrical alterations to be done. Everything stays where it is and is replaced in place. Of course if you want to make some minor alterations that is not a major issue either. With our a la carte services, we can take the renovation as far as you like. Please note this service will not be available for bathrooms that were constructed before 1980 or consist of plaster walls
Schedule your Virtual Consultation today, and we will be able to discuss in detail and provide a fully detailed proposal within 60 minutes of completing your consultation!
What is a Partial Demolition Bathroom Makeover?
A partial demolition bathroom makeover means we remove and replace specific bathroom elements while preserving what’s still in good condition. It’s a selective approach that saves time and money while still delivering a dramatically improved bathroom.
What We Typically Replace:
Vanity & Countertop:
- Remove old vanity cabinet
- Install new vanity in same footprint
- Add new countertop (quartz, granite, or solid surface)
- Update sink and faucet
- Improve storage with better cabinet design
Flooring:
- Remove old vinyl, linoleum, or worn tile
- Install new tile, luxury vinyl, or other flooring
- Update grout and sealing
- Create fresh, modern appearance
Fixtures:
- Replace toilet with newer, more efficient model
- Install new faucets (matching finish throughout)
- Update showerhead and controls
- Add modern hardware (towel bars, toilet paper holder)
Lighting:
- Remove outdated light fixtures
- Install modern vanity lighting
- Upgrade ceiling lights
- Improve overall illumination
Paint & Finishing:
- Fresh paint on walls and ceiling
- New caulking around tub/shower
- Updated trim if needed
- Clean, finished appearance
Accessories:
- New mirrors
- Modern hardware
- Updated towel bars and hooks
- Fresh shower curtain or updated doors
What We Typically Keep:
✅ Existing tub or shower (if in good condition)
✅ Wall tile (if not damaged and style is acceptable)
✅ Shower tile (if waterproofing is sound)
✅ Plumbing lines (if functioning properly)
✅ Electrical wiring (if adequate and safe)
✅ Wall structure (drywall/plaster if undamaged)
✅ Layout (fixture locations stay the same)
This selective approach is why partial makeovers cost $4,000-$12,000 instead of $12,000-$25,000 for full demolition.
The “Partial Demolition” Explained:
We call it “partial demolition” because we DO remove some elements:
- Vanity comes out completely
- Old flooring is removed
- Some tile may be removed if replacing
- Fixtures are disconnected and replaced
But we DON’T demolish:
- Walls down to studs
- Entire plumbing system
- All electrical wiring
- Structural elements
It’s targeted removal, not complete teardown.
Timeline: 1-2 Weeks
Week 1:
- Days 1-2: Remove old vanity, fixtures, flooring
- Days 3-4: Install new flooring, prepare surfaces
- Day 5: Paint walls and ceiling
Week 2 (if needed):
- Days 1-2: Install new vanity and countertop
- Day 3: Install new fixtures and hardware
- Day 4: Final details and cleanup
Many partial makeovers complete in just one week!
Who Needs a Partial Bathroom Makeover in New Jersey?
Homeowners Preparing to Sell
Real estate agents throughout New Jersey consistently recommend updating bathrooms before listing your home. A fresh, modern bathroom helps your property:
- Sell faster in competitive markets
- Command higher asking prices
- Appeal to more buyers
- Pass inspections without issues
- Photograph beautifully for listings
Why Partial Makeover for Home Sales:
- ROI: Returns 50-60% of investment at resale
- Timeline: Complete before listing (1-2 weeks)
- Cost-effective: Spend less, gain more buyer appeal
- Low risk: No major construction surprises
- Neutral appeal: Modern updates everyone likes
If you’re selling within 6-12 months, partial makeover is often smarter than full renovation.
Renters & Landlords
For Landlords: Rental properties need updated bathrooms to:
- Attract quality tenants
- Justify higher rents
- Reduce vacancy time
- Prevent tenant complaints
- Maintain property value
Partial makeovers make financial sense because:
- Lower upfront investment
- Quick turnaround between tenants
- Durable, practical updates
- Easy to repeat in multiple units
For Renters (with Permission): Some long-term renters improve bathrooms with landlord approval:
- Make rental feel like home
- Enjoy better functionality
- Sometimes negotiate rent reduction
- Improve daily living quality
Budget-Conscious Homeowners
Not everyone has $20,000-$30,000 for complete bathroom renovation. If you:
- Have a limited budget ($5,000-$10,000)
- Want the most improvement per dollar
- Don’t need layout changes
- Like your current tub/shower
- Just want things to look and work better
Partial makeover delivers maximum bang for your buck.
Homeowners with Good Existing Systems
If your bathroom has:
- Plumbing that works perfectly (no leaks, good pressure)
- Adequate electrical (enough outlets, working lights)
- Solid tub or shower in good condition
- Functional layout that meets your needs
- No water damage or mold
There’s no reason to pay for complete demolition. Just update what’s worn or outdated.
People Wanting Quick Results
Life doesn’t always allow for 4-6 week renovation projects. Choose partial makeover when you:
- Need bathroom functional quickly
- Can’t be without bathroom for weeks
- Have upcoming event or visitors
- Want minimal disruption to household
- Don’t have time for extensive project management
Secondary Bathroom Updates
Your master bathroom might deserve full custom renovation, but what about:
- Guest bathroom (used occasionally)
- Kids’ bathroom (will be updated again in years)
- Basement bathroom (functional but dated)
- Hall bathroom (adequate but needs freshening)
Partial makeovers make sense for bathrooms that don’t need luxury treatment but deserve to look nice.
Homeowners Testing Updates
Some people aren’t sure what they want long-term. Partial makeover lets you:
- Update on smaller budget first
- See how you like changes
- Live with new style before bigger commitment
- Plan future full renovation with experience
- Enjoy improved space immediately
You can always do full renovation later if desired.

Full renovation might not give you time to enjoy the investment. Partial makeover:
- Costs less upfront
- Completes faster (list sooner)
- Provides excellent ROI for resale
- Makes bathroom appealing to buyers
- Addresses most buyer concerns
You Just Bought a Home
New homeowners often want to update but:
- Already spent significantly on purchase
- Have other immediate priorities (HVAC, roof, kitchen)
- Want to spread renovation costs over time
- Need livable bathroom now, can upgrade later
Partial makeover makes bathroom enjoyable immediately without depleting savings.
Your Bathroom is Mostly Good
If 70% of your bathroom works well:
- Tub/shower in great condition
- Plumbing operates perfectly
- Layout is functional
- Walls are solid
Why pay to demolish and rebuild what’s already good? Just update the 30% that’s tired.
You Have Multiple Bathrooms to Update
Three bathrooms need updating but budget is limited? Do partial makeovers on all three instead of full renovation on one. This way:
- All bathrooms look updated
- Entire home shows better
- Total budget spreads further
- Guests see updated bathrooms throughout
You’re Testing the Waters
Not ready for major renovation commitment? Partial makeover lets you:
- Experience working with contractors (test us out!)
- See how you like certain materials
- Live with updated bathroom before bigger decision
- Enjoy improvements now, plan larger project later

Sometimes life demands fast action:
- Parents moving in (need accessible bathroom quickly)
- Home daycare inspection coming
- Wedding at your house
- Major event hosting
- Unexpected guests staying
Partial makeover delivers results in 1-2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a partial bathroom makeover take?
Most partial bathroom makeovers complete in 1-2 weeks. Small powder rooms often finish in just 5-7 days. Larger 4-piece bathrooms may take the full 2 weeks. Timeline depends on: bathroom size, whether we’re replacing flooring, countertop fabrication time (usually 3-5 days), and material availability. We provide specific timelines during your free consultation based on your exact project. Unlike full demolition (3-4 weeks), partial makeovers are significantly faster.
Can I use my bathroom during the makeover?
For most of the project, no—the bathroom is unusable. However, the timeline is much shorter than full renovation. During demolition and installation days (typically 5-7 work days), you’ll need alternative arrangements. Unlike full renovations that take 3-4 weeks, you’re typically without your bathroom for just 1-2 weeks. We work efficiently to minimize this inconvenience. Some homeowners schedule makeovers when they’re away on vacation.
What if you discover problems behind the vanity or under flooring?
Sometimes removing old vanity or flooring reveals issues: minor water damage, mold spots, subfloor deterioration, or plumbing concerns. When this happens, we immediately photograph the issue, send photos through our app, explain the problem clearly, provide solution options with costs, and get your approval before proceeding. Most discoveries add only $200-$500 to address properly. Our 3-year warranty covers all our work including any repairs we make.
Can partial makeover include new shower tile?
Yes, but this increases cost and timeline. Replacing shower tile requires: removing old tile, ensuring waterproofing is sound or replacing it, installing new tile properly, grouting and sealing, and additional time for curing. This adds approximately $1,500-$3,000 to project cost and extends timeline to 2-3 weeks. If shower tile is in reasonable condition, we often recommend keeping it during partial makeover to stay within budget and timeline goals. You can always do shower remodel separately later if desired.
Will my partial makeover look mismatched if I keep some old elements?
Not if planned well! This is where professional guidance helps. We strategically coordinate new selections with elements you’re keeping. For example: if keeping white tub, we choose vanity colors that complement white; if keeping beige tile, we select paint and fixtures that work with beige; if keeping shower tile with blue tones, we incorporate those tones in new flooring or paint. Result is cohesive, intentional design—not random mismatched elements. Most people are surprised how well coordinated selections make everything look updated together.
Can I upgrade to better materials than standard options?
Absolutely! Our pricing ranges reflect different material quality levels. You can upgrade: vanity from stock to semi-custom or custom, countertop from cultured marble to quartz or granite, flooring from ceramic to porcelain or natural stone, fixtures from standard to premium brands, hardware from basic to designer styles. Upgrades increase cost but may be worth it for bathrooms you use daily. We’ll show you options at different price points and help you decide where upgrades matter most for your specific situation and budget.
Is partial makeover worth it or should I just save for full renovation?
This depends on your situation. Choose partial makeover if: your systems work fine (no plumbing or electrical problems), layout meets your needs, tub/shower is in good condition, you’re selling within 2 years (won’t enjoy full renovation long enough), budget is limited now, or you need improvements quickly. Choose full renovation if: systems need replacement, layout doesn’t work, tub/shower must be changed, significant water damage exists, or you’re staying long-term and want everything perfect. Many homeowners do partial makeover now, enjoy improvements for years, then do full renovation later when ready for bigger investment. There’s no wrong choice—just what fits your needs and timeline.
Do partial makeovers require permits in New Jersey?
Usually no. Most partial bathroom makeovers don’t require permits because we’re not: moving plumbing lines, changing electrical circuits, altering structure, or relocating fixtures. We’re simply replacing fixtures in same locations with like-for-like updates. However, if during your project we discover issues requiring repairs (like replacing rotted subfloor or updating wiring), those repairs may require permits depending on your municipality. We’re familiar with all local requirements and handle any needed permits. Permitting is typically NOT needed for standard partial makeovers, saving you time and permit costs.

Paul’s communication was clear and direct throughout. He coordinated seamlessly with all the vendors (plumbing, electrical, tile) and kept us informed every step of the way. Everything was thorough, organized, and highly professional. The quality of work is outstanding. Our bathroom is now the nicest room in the house.Posted on FaithTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Paul, his crew, and the contractors he assembled were all excellent. Paul's experience was clear from the outset. Communication with everyone was easy through PRG's system. I'm so pleased with the results of their work that I have no hesitation in recommending them. I wanted special accommodations in the bathroom for mobility limitations, and they really came through.Posted on Andrew StayningsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After careful consideration choosing between several bathroom remodeling companies we decided to go with "The Powder Room Guys" and they were worth every penny! Between the efficiency of the ring central app giving you the progress of the job and being able to reach out to any team member at the tip of your fingertips and the thorough communication Paul and his team bring to you throughout the entire process was phenomenal! Unfortunately we needed to gut everything down to the studs and start fresh (100 year old house) But as worrisome or stressful as projects like this could be (especially since me and my family don't have much experience in these types of projects) Paul and his team kept us informed on anything we needed along the way, kept it professional and made sure we were safe and up to code! Any changes or concerns my family had They worked tirelessly to keep us satisfied and made sure things were up to the standards we wanted! This was more than just a business They truly care about their clients and I would highly recommend them again!Posted on Juliet Keeler-LeBienTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot recommend the Powder Room Guys highly enough. They completely transformed my old powder room, and the results are nothing short of stunning. The project started with a full demolition-walls, tiles, and everything in between-and from there, the team rebuilt the space from the ground up. What truly set them apart was not just their craftsmanship, but their guidance throughout the process. They helped me choose the perfect sink and mirror, tiles, advice on wall colors and appliances, and made thoughful recommendations that elevated the entire space far beyond what I originally imagined. The coordination and management of the full project was impeccable. The manager ensured that all teams work was seamless, timelines were respected, and communication was clear throughout. The final result has been very impressive that everyone who visits our home asks to see it. Even my seven-year-old daughter proudly invites guests in saying, " Please come see our new powder room-it is so beautiful!" And she is absolutely right -it truly is. This remodeling was a wonderful experience from start to finish, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the Powder Room Guys to anyone looking for top-quality remodeling work.Posted on Virgil ZhangTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Paul and his crew at The Powder Room guys did a wonderful job on a remodel of my full bathroom. As an interior designer, I've worked with a number of different contractors, and this was the best experience I've ever had. This was not an easy job. It involved relocating the bathtub/shower and toilet, and adding ventilation, in a very small space in a very old house. Trying to figure out how to reroute the plumbing and HVAC around all the framing in a bathroom with very little extra space, was no easy feat, but Paul and his crew figured it out and gave me everything I asked for. The communication and organization was also top notch, and is something that sets this team apart from the overwhelming majority of contractors. Scheduling among all the subcontractors was clear and efficient, and I always knew exactly who was going to show up and when. Everyone was professional, pleasant, good at their jobs, and easy to work with. I've already recommended Paul to two of my clients, and I'm looking forward to continuing to work with him!Posted on M BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
